The purpose of Let’s Know! is to develop skills that are foundational to reading comprehension in young children. Let’s Know! uses core content such as science texts and story books as a base for developing these foundational skills. Let’s Know! provides a systematic scope and sequence of instruction – organized over one academic year – that is designed to build students’ language skills. Some of the language skills targeted are knowledge of different text-structures, making inferences, vocabulary, and comprehension monitoring.
Let’s Know! includes three 7-week units and one 4-week unit which span one academic year for each grade (PreK to Grade 3). Eleven books are used across the four units. Each unit has one overarching emphasis:
- Compare and Contrast
- Description
- Cause and Effect
- Cycles or Sequences
The Let’s Know lessons follow a gradual release of responsibility model. In the lesson routine there is a Set that starts the lesson; an I Do section where the teacher models the targeted teaching objective; the students practice with teacher scaffolding in the We Do; the You Do is when students practice independently; and finally the Close where the teacher restates the focus of the lessons and brings it to an end. Within each lesson section, there is optional scripting for the lessons.
Let’s Know! also features an ELL curriculum supplement, named ¡Vamos a Aprender!. ¡Vamos a Aprender! closely aligns with the PreK version of Let’s Know! and features Spanish and English language lessons and materials,
